While others might focus on the dry and statistical view of the past, Engel goes inside the lives of the people on the ground who made history happen. From the White House to the front lines to the factory floor, he shares new revelations and insights, with humor to help us find a way forward by studying those who walked the same path before.
Jeffrey A. Engel is the founding director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, Professor in the William P. Clements Department of History, and a Senior Fellow of the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies. Trained at Cornell University, Oxford University, and Yale University, he received his PhD in American History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001. He has previously taught at Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Texas A&M University, where he was the Kruse ’52 Professor and received recognition for teaching at the college, university, and system levels. In 2019, SMU’s Resident Life Students named him their campus-wide Hope Professor of the Year.
Engel has authored and edited a total of thirteen books on American foreign policy and the American presidency, the latest including When the World Seemed New: George H.W. Bush and the End of the Cold War and the co-authored Impeachment: An American History. In 2025 Engel will be the Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Diplomatische Akademie Wien (Vienna School of International Studies).

The Historical Significance of the 2024 Presidential Election: A Bipartisan Look
Every four years we are told the upcoming election is the most important of our lifetime. It usually isn’t. But every now and then, the nation’s fate indeed hinges on the outcome of a presidential vote. This is one such year. Both major party candidates cast their opponent as an existential threat, and the nation’s future will likely prove much different under a Trump or a Harris presidency. But beyond the noise, the fearmongering, and our collective exhaustion, what makes this election so significant from an historical perspective? We’ve had razor-thin and disputed elections before. Since 2000 the popular vote winner failed to gain an electoral college victory—and thus the White House—twice. That had only happened three times in the prior two centuries, and we remain in the shadow of January 6, 2021 and its unprecedented challenge to the final tally. Will similar electoral and constitutional chaos occur again in 2024? Will the candidate’s character ultimately matter more than their vote count? This keynote, focused not on partisanship but on a dispassionate view of history, offers insights and leadership lessons drawn from previous contests, including the existential ones, offering a glimpse into what we might expect in November, in January, and beyond.
Surviving America’s Existential Crises
Every generation faces crises. Yet only three times in our nation’s history has the republic’s very existence been in doubt. George Washington left his well-earned retirement to provide a symbol of stability and virtue the new nation would not have formed without. Abraham Lincoln oversaw a country rent in two. Franklin D. Roosevelt governed during an economic crisis so great many wondered if democracy itself could survive. Today our politically-riven nation may well face only the fourth existential crisis in its long history, and only the lessons of the past can help navigate the rocky shoals ahead.
America at 250: A Founder’s Report Card
It’s been two and a half centuries since minutemen opened fire on redcoats at Lexington and Concord in a moment typically considered the start of America’s war for independence. The country they helped forge grew over time from a piddling player on the periphery of the international system to the world’s most dominant force since imperial Rome. What would those early revolutionaries, including the group that fired the shot heard round the world, their counterparts that published the Declaration of Independence the next year, and the ensuing generation that wrote a new constitution think about our nation today? Anyone who tells you “the founders thought” shouldn’t be listened to. They were as diverse in perspective and opinion as we today. But consistencies abounded within their thinking, enough to ask how we’d fare if that first generation graded ours today.
Putin and the Presidents
US-Russian relations are at a new post-Cold War low. But those tensions go far beyond the current crisis over Ukraine. Russian-American antagonisms stem instead from long-standing geopolitical differences — different worldviews, really — held by American and Russian leaders since the Cold War’s End. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev set the stage for change, but only one man has been a constant in their critical bilateral relationship since: Vladimir Putin. His personal story reveals much of why the world is at war with Russia today, a story told through the evolution of his relationship with the U.S. Presidents he’s known: George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden.

Marie Yovanovitch served three times as U.S. Ambassador, most recently in Kyiv as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Previously, she served as U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic (2005-2008) and the Republic of Armenia (2008-2011). She retired from the Foreign Service in 2020 and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a non-Resident Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University.
Born into a family that survived both Soviet and Nazi terror before emigrating to the U.S., Yovanovitch rose to the top of her profession in the crucible of the former USSR. Following early assignments in Moscow, London, Ottawa, and Mogadishu, she served as Deputy Director of the Russia Desk and then, as a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, she was named Deputy Chief in Ukraine. Within the Department of State, Ambassador Yovanovitch has worked on the Russia desk, the Office of European Security Affairs, and the Operations Center. She also served as the Dean of the School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State and as the Deputy Commandant and International Advisor at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, National Defense University.
Ambassador Yovanovitch earned the Senior Foreign Service Performance Award eight times and the State Department’s Superior Honor Award on nine occasions. She is the recipient of two Presidential Distinguished Service Awards and the Secretary’s Diplomacy in Human Rights Award. Following her retirement, Ambassador Yovanovitch received the Trainor Award for Excellence in the Conduct of Diplomacy from Georgetown University, the inaugural Richard G. Lugar Award from Indiana University, the 2020 PEN/Benenson Courage Award from Pen/America, the Morgenthau Award from the Armenian Assembly of America, the American Spirit Award for Distinguished Public Service from the Common Good, and the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government.
In early 2022, Marie Yovanovitch’s memoir, Lessons From The Edge, was an instant New York Times bestseller. The late Madeleine Albright called the book “A brilliant, engaging, and inspiring memoir from one of America’s wisest and most courageous diplomats—essential reading for current policymakers, aspiring public servants, and anyone who cares about America’s role in the world.”

Robles was the recipient of the “Jimmy V Perseverance Award” at the ESPN ESPYs and he has also received the NFL “Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award”. Robles is a Nike athlete, the first signed to an agreement after having retired from active participation in a sport. He is currently ESPN's NCAA wrestling analyst and expert and is the wrestling analyst for the Pac-12 Network as well. He was inducted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012 and is the author of Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion. In 2013, President Obama appointed Robles as a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. Additionally, Robles was a member of the Presidential Delegation to the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Games.
In 2015, the National Wrestling Media Associated awarded Robles with the \"Broadcaster of the Year\" award, and then he was inducted into Arizona's Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Between 2018 - 2021, he became the Guinness World Record Holder for 3 different pull-up records. Most recently, Robles became inducted into ASU's Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame.
Robles lives in Chandler, Arizona. The script for a feature film chronicling his remarkable life story has been completed, and the film is currently in pre-production with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company.

The Grace of Silence and the Power of Words
Award-winning journalist Michele Norris's 2010 book The Grace of Silence started out as a quest to uncover how America talked about race in the wake of the Obama presidential election. What resulted was what Norris calls an \"accidental memoir.\" Named one of the year's best books by The Christian Science Monitor, the book became an eye-opening family history lesson revealing her own family's racial legacy and the larger conversation surrounding race in America. Jonathan Karl is ABC News Chief Washington correspondent and co-anchor of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. He is author of three New York Times bestsellers, including his most recent, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party. In 2021, Mediaite named Karl one of the top 10 “Most Influential in News Media.”
The former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, Karl reported from the White House under four presidents and fifteen press secretaries. He has covered eight presidential elections and has broad experience covering Congress, foreign policy and the military, and has reported from more than 30 countries. He has covered every major beat in Washington, including the White House, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon and the State Department.
Karl’s reporting has been recognized with some of the most prestigious honors in journalism, including the Walter Cronkite Award for National Individual Achievement and the National Press Foundation’s Everett McKinley Dirksen Award, the highest honor for congressional reporting. He is also one of the few journalists to win the Radio and TV Correspondents’ Association’s top award for excellence in Washington-based reporting twice, in 2010 and 2015. He won an Emmy® Award for coverage of the 2009 Inauguration of President Barack Obama.
During the 2016 presidential cycle, he did the first network interview with then-candidate Donald Trump, the first interview with Bernie Sanders as a presidential candidate and a rare, exclusive interview with the reclusive billionaire Charles Koch.
Before joining ABC News, he served as senior congressional correspondent and senior political correspondent for CNN. Karl graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.

Wallace is a former CNN anchor and the host of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on HBO Max. Praised as an “equal opportunity inquisitor” by The Boston Globe and “an aggressive journalist,” “sharp edged” and “solid” by The Washington Post, Wallace interviews CEOs and media moguls, Hollywood legends and newsmakers across politics, business, world affairs, sports and culture.
With more than 50 award-winning years of experience in broadcasting, Wallace was most recently an anchor with CNN, and previously was with FOX News, where he anchored FOX News Sunday. Throughout his almost two decades at FOX, Wallace participated in coverage of every major political event, secured numerous high-profile interviews with dignitaries as well as U.S and foreign leaders, covered five presidential elections, and interviewed every president since George H.W. Bush.
Before joining FOX, Wallace worked at ABC News for 14 years where he served as the chief correspondent for PrimeTime and a substitute host for Nightline.
